History

The Hulbert Block is a three-story, brick clad, Edwardian commercial building located on Whyte Avenue, the most vibrant street in Old Strathcona. The building was originally constructed in 1912 after a permit was issued to Russell A. Hulbert. Our name is a tribute to the year it was built.

The building was formally designated as a historic site in 2016 after receiving approval from city council. The Hulbert Block’s significance lays in connection to the early development of Strathcona, which dates back to the arrival of the railway in 1892.

After receiving a historical designation, Scott Ashe, the principal heritage planner said: “Each of these historical designations emphasizes the rich history of our city and the importance of keeping that history alive.”

Since its inception in 1992, Block 1912 has served the Old Stratchona community as well as been featured on the Food Network, received dozens of Golden Fork Awards, among other countless mentions and accolades for our coffee, deserts, and sandwiches.

Block 1912 continues to be an advocate for the local art and music scene with our Monday jazz, and Thursday night live music as well as featuring local art displayed on our walls. Artists and musicians are encouraged to pitch their portfolios to the manager in order to be featured in the café.
